The Books

Few fans of the film "Shaft" know of the series of novels featuring the character and written by the original creator, Ernest Tidyman. This page is my attempt to share the knowledge of these long out-of-print novels with the "Shaft" fans around the Internet.

The novels were:

Shaft (April, 1971)
Shaft Among The Jews (June, 1972)
Shaft's Big Score (August, 1972)
Shaft Has A Ball (April, 1973)
Goodbye, Mr. Shaft (1973)
Shaft's Carnival Of Killers (September, 1974)
The Last Shaft (1975)

Other items of interest:

Strangely enough, it appears that the film "Shaft In Africa" did not have a novelization. This is possibly due to the fact that Ernest Tidyman was not involved with the film in any way.
There was also a 1975 film called "Diamonds" (aka "Diamond Shaft"), this film is not really a Shaft film. It stars Richard Roundtree as "Archie" (playing second lead to Robert Shaw ) and apparently resembles Shaft Among The Jews only in the fact that the diamond trade is involved.
A. Scott Galloway's liner notes to the Best of Shaft CD say "Shaft was not originally written as a Black man". Ernest Tidyman's son has stated that this is incorrect.
